A magnitude 4.1 earthquake was recorded south of Hastings, Nebraska at 12:59 pm on Sunday. The shaking was felt all the way east in the Omaha metro area.

A smaller aftershock followed at 2:26 pm. A quake of this size is strong enough to be felt by many people near the epicenter, but it typically does not cause significant damage.

While Nebraska is not known for frequent large earthquakes, small to moderate quakes do occur from time to time.

Much of southern Nebraska sits on ancient, buried faults within the central United States. These faults are not as active as those along the West Coast, but they can occasionally produce measurable earthquakes.

Most are minor and cause little impact.
