Just when it looked as if Madison, South Dakota's Fourth of July fireworks plan was going to resemble a dud of a skyrocket that never took flight, somebody grabbed a lighter.

In what can only be described as a true red, white, and blue comeback story, the annual Madison, South Dakota, fireworks show is officially back on for 2026, just in time for America’s 250th birthday celebration.

According to Dakota News Now, news broke recently that things weren’t looking so festive in “Madtown.” The Madison Chamber of Commerce announced on social media that the long-running fireworks display had been canceled due to rising costs. And not just a little bump, organizers say the price of fireworks has tripled compared to previous years. That’s enough even to make Uncle Sam wince.

Once word got out, local businesses and residents snapped into action. The Madison Dairy Queen teamed up with local realtor Brandon Burg to spark a last-minute push to save the show, and that idea lit a fuse across the community. Donations started rolling in from all corners of Lake County, proving once again that you don’t mess with a small town Fourth of July fireworks display.

Now, thanks to that overwhelming support, the fireworks are back where they belong, helping to light up the summer sky of Madison this Fourth of July!

Thanks to the event's reimagining, Madison's display is getting a whole new identity going forward. From now on, it will be known as the Madison Community Fireworks Show.

This year’s celebration will take place at Prairie Village, just two miles west of Madison on Highway 34, an ideal spot to spread out a lawn chair, grab a cold drink, and celebrate 250 years of American independence with friends, family, and a sky filled full of breathtaking pyrotechnics.
