“I feel the need… the need for speed!” That wasn't just a movie quote earlier this week. It ended up being more of a mission statement for one Sioux Falls driver who led Brookings authorities on a high-speed car chase that resembled something straight out of an action film.

According to Dakota News Now, 25-year-old Christian Hofer of Sioux Falls found himself at the center of a high-speed chase Monday night (June 8) after deputies attempted a routine traffic stop around 10:30 PM. Instead of pulling over, Hofer put the pedal to the metal, in an attempt to show that his Ford Mustang had something to prove, or at least something under the hood.

The car's acceleration was no joke. Reports say the deputy initially pursuing Hofer lost sight of the Mustang almost immediately. That’s not exactly easy to do on the wide-open roads of South Dakota.

Dakota News Now says about six minutes later, another deputy traveling north on 471st Avenue encountered Hofer heading the opposite direction, and this time, they got a number to go with all the chaos: 140 miles per hour!  That is some real "Smokey and the Bandit" meets the "Fast and the Furious" stuff on a South Dakota county road after dark.

The high-speed ride eventually came to an end near Highway 14 and Stadium Road, just by the South Dakota State University campus. Not because Hofer had a sudden change of heart, but because his Mustang ran out of gas. Turns out, even high-performance horsepower has its limits.

In what might be the most ironic twist of the night, Hofer reportedly admitted to police that he knew he was driving way too fast. No kidding.

Authorities, however, were not in a forgiving mood that night. Hofer was arrested and booked on multiple charges, including traffic violations, drug charges, and a weapons violation.

As of now, he’s being held in the Brookings County Detention Center on a $10,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in court on Monday, June 15.

Should Hofer ever decide to go all "Dukes of Hazard" on law enforcement again, he might want to make sure he has a full tank of gas next time.
