If you're like some of my friends, you have an HGTV addiction. And it doesn't matter how many "demos, renos, or home flips" they've witnessed on this Home & Garden TV channel, they simply can't look away.

This time HGTV turned the tables on their devoted fans and went out looking themselves. They were trying to find "small towns with big Christmas spirit" and here are the results for our tri-state area.

South Dakota's Best Christmas Small Town is Deadwood

HGTV chose this town with a population of around 1,200 because of its deep historical roots and their opinion that it turns into a winter wonderland with ice skating and live music on Outlaw Square. There is also a yearly Holiday Open House where shoppers can find special deals and treats at the shops and restaurants in Deadwood.

The proximity of the Black Hills and its additional outdoor activities were also included in HGTV's high rating of this small, but great, South Dakota Christmas town.

Minnesota's Best Christmas Small Town is Stillwater

Once again historic roots played a role in HGTV's choice of this town by the St. Croix River. They mentioned the Ann Bean Mansion as a very Christmasy spot to stop in after you've had a busy day visiting all the shops decked out for the holidays.

Stillwater also hosts winter games and outdoor hockey, and during their "Hometown for the Holidays" event they even offer carriage rides through the town's holiday bedazzled streets.

Iowa's Best Christmas Small Town is Pella

Although the Pella name is well known for windows and doors, that is not why HGTV chose Pella as the most Christmasy small town in Iowa. There is, once again, a historical aspect, as they mention the beautiful European architecture in the city, as well as the Dutch windmills by the town.

There are beautiful light displays to see and you can even tour the historic Vermeer Windmill or head out to Lake Red Rock to go snowshoeing or bald eagle spotting.
