Sioux Falls Fire Rescue Seeks Next Generation of Firefighters
Sioux Falls Fire Rescue Opens The Door to Future Heroes
If you’ve ever thought about becoming a firefighter, or you’re just looking for a career with purpose, adrenaline, and real impact - your opportunity is about to arrive.
Sioux Falls Fire Rescue (SFFR) will officially open applications for its next cadet academy on April 20, giving aspiring firefighters a chance to jump into one of the most rewarding careers in the community. The academy itself is slated to begin in early 2027, but the journey starts now.

And here’s the best part: you don’t need prior firefighting or EMS experience to apply.
City talent acquisition coordinator Chad Quissell says SFFR is looking for people who are driven, dependable, and ready to rise to the challenge. "We're seeking individuals who are committed to service, eager to learn, and able to perform well in high-pressure situations."
What It Takes to Apply
There are a few basic requirements.
- Must be 21–44 years old
- High school diploma or GED (or equivalent experience/training)
- Valid driver’s license
- Vision correctable to at least 20/40
- Must be a nonsmoker
Those who meet the minimum qualifications will be invited to take part in a virtual entrance exam in June. Applicants who earn top scores on the entrance exam will be invited to an in-person interview.
After the entrance exam and in-person interview process is concluded, individuals will be ranked according to their combined scores. Conditional employment offers will be extended to the top-ranking candidates, who will be invited to participate in an individual physical test, along with a psychological exam, a medical exam, and a background check.
The hiring process takes place from July to October, with conditional offers extended to those who successfully pass all hiring steps for the 15-week paid cadet academy.
More Than Firefighting: A Career With Purpose
Division Chief Luke Smidt emphasizes that this career is about more than fighting fires. "Serving with SFFR means having a direct impact on our community while pursuing a career that offers room to grow in multiple directions."
That growth starts in the academy, where cadets train in:
- Fire suppression and rescue techniques
- Hazardous materials response
- Wildland firefighting
- Rope rescue and extrication
- Emergency Medical Services (EMS)
Cadets also complete an EMS course that prepares them for national EMT certification, because in Sioux Falls, firefighters are often first on the scene for medical emergencies.

By the end of training, cadets will earn Firefighter I and II certifications, preparing them for real-world response from day one.
Applications don’t open until April 20—but now is the time to prepare. Gather your materials, brush up on fitness, and get ready to take the first step toward a career that truly makes a difference.
