Egg Prices Are Way Up Again In Minnesota, Iowa, And South Dakota
Minnesota, Iowa, and South Dakota produce a lot of eggs...so why are they so expensive!?
Egg Prices continue a dramatic surge across Minnesota, Iowa, South Dakota, and then nation.
Egg prices rocketed to $4.15 per dozen in December, up from $2.51 in December 2023 which is a 36.8% surge according to the Consumer Price Index and U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
U.S. consumers are facing steep egg prices with a dozen Grade A eggs jumping 37% in price from last year. This increase far outpaces the overall 2.5% rise in food prices.
The dramatic price hike stems from a severe bird flu outbreak devastating poultry flocks.
In December alone, over 13 million egg-laying hens died from the virus.
An additional 3.3 million hens were lost in early January.
Jada Thompson, a University of Arkansas poultry economist, confirms these flock losses are a critical factor driving egg price inflation.
The ongoing bird flu crisis continues to challenge the egg industry's production capacity.
