Taste Your Way Through Sioux Falls ‘Bean Battle’ This May
Over the years, Sioux Falls has developed quite a reputation for fierce and competitive battles.
Just ask anyone who’s waited in line during the Downtown Burger Battle or passionately defended their favorite Southside Slamwich. Now, there’s a new contender brewing in town, and this one comes with a caffeine kick strong enough to power your morning commute down Louise Avenue: the Sioux Empire Bean Battle.
If your day doesn’t officially begin until you’ve had that first sip of coffee, the month of May is about to become your favorite month in the Sioux Empire.

According to Dakota News Now, Community Outreach has teamed up with American Bank & Trust and First PREMIER Bank to launch the Sioux Empire Bean Battle, a month-long campaign aimed at tackling homelessness in Sioux Falls. And they’re doing it in a way that just makes sense, by bringing people together over great cups of coffee.
Here’s how it works. Eight popular coffee shops across Sioux Falls and the surrounding communities are squaring off in a friendly competition. Participating shops include The Cappuccino Cabin, Daylily Coffee, Dunn Brothers, The Human Bean, Scooter’s Coffee (with locations stretching from Sioux Falls to Brandon, Harrisburg, and Tea), Queen City Bakery, Voodoo Coffee Shop, and Zooks Coffee.
Your mission?
Sample their specialty drinks throughout May, and rate each one. At the end of the month, the highest-scoring drink earns bragging rights as the Bean Battle champion.
But this isn’t just about finding the perfect cup of joe, although that is an extra perk. The goal is to spark real conversations about homelessness in Sioux Falls, conversations that often happen best when you’re sitting across from someone with a warm mug in hand, having a spirited discussion.
