A Quick History of Walmart

Walmart started in 1962 in Rogers, Arkansas. Sam Walton had an idea to offer low prices and great customer service. Now Walmart is a household name with stores all over the world, including here in South Dakota.

Altogether, there are 4,606 Walmart stores in the United States. The company employs 1.6 million people.

Walmart first came to South Dakota in 1990 when it opened several stores. The first Walmarts were in Yankton, Watertown, Aberdeen, Sioux Falls, Brookings, and Spearfish. Rapid City, Pierre, and Mitchell got theirs the next year.

Today, there are 15 Walmart locations in South Dakota where just over 6000 people work. The company also operates two Sam's Club membership warehouse stores in South Dakota, in Sioux Falls and Rapid City.
