South Dakota Governor Rhoden Channels Inner ‘Gunsmoke’ Sheriff
Halloween night was full of tricks and treats in the Sioux Empire on Friday. Despite the surprisingly chilly weather, kids and kids at heart in South Dakota dressed up for this spooky season.
Halloween costumes like witches, vampires, and clowns haunted the streets across the state. Even South Dakota's First Family got into the Halloween spirit. From the looks of South Dakota Governor Larry Rhoden's Facebook page, he had a lot of fun for his first official Halloween as the "sheriff" of our state

For the first time as governor, South Dakota Governor Rhoden welcomed trick-or-treaters to the Governor's Residence for delicious Halloween treats. No tricks. And just like South Dakota Governors before him, Governor Rhoden, along with First Lady Sandy, dressed up for the occasion. While he passed out candy to the trick-or-treaters at the Governor's Residence, Governor Rhoden revealed his costume for the evening. Think of a beloved sheriff in Dodge City, Kansas...
Just for the day, "Sheriff Matt Dillon" from the classic TV show Gunsmoke was taking over the Governor's mansion! Matt Dillon was the Marshal of Dodge City, Kansas. His job was to preserve law and order on the western frontier in the 1870s.
First Lady Sandy was Matt Dillon's loyal cowgirl. They made sure everyone got a big chocolate bar and Halloween spirit!
It's always an entertaining tradition to see how the Governors and their families in South Dakota celebrate Halloween! Last Halloween, former South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem and her family dressed as Annie Oakley and her husband as Wild Bill.
Parents, don't forget to enjoy some candy! You deserve a treat too!
