A local Sioux Falls animal shelter just witnessed something so heartbreaking and 'disturbing' that highlights the realities of animal cruelty in our neighborhood.

Recently, the Sioux Falls Area Humane Society received a call about an injured dog. But to the surprise of the brave Humane Officers, this was more than just a hurt animal. This dog was in pain, and it's possible someone harmed the dog deliberately.

In an unbelievably heartbreaking Facebook post from the Sioux Falls Area Humane Society, officers found  "an old, emaciated dog. Her body frail, her eyes heavy with exhaustion, and her wound… devastating. A deep, open injury that should have ended her life." It's almost surreal that someone in the Sioux Empire could be so...evil to their pet. Their best friend. It's sick.

This is a chance for the Sioux Falls Area Humane Society to speak for those who don't have a voice. It's an eye-opening moment that shows animal cruelty does happen in the Sioux Falls community.

We don’t know this dog’s story. We don’t know if she ever felt warmth, comfort, or love. We don’t know if someone once held her close and whispered promises that were later broken. What we do know is this: She did not deserve to suffer any longer. She did not deserve the agony, the confusion, or the fear.

There was nothing left to do but give her what we could, peace. A kindness she should have always had, even if only for the last moments of her life.

There are always other options for pet owners who feel lost. No animal should suffer like this.
