A full pink moon will rise in the South DakotaIowa, and Minnesota skies this Tuesday night April 23rd. But what is a pink moon and will we be able to see it?

Believe it or not, a "pink moon" is not actually pink. According to The Old Farmer's Almanac, it’s part of an old tradition from Native American, Colonial American, and European cultures. Their custom is to name each moon based on the current season the full moon happens: 

Although we wish the name “Pink Moon” had to do with the color of the Moon, the reality is not quite as mystical or awe-inspiring. In truth, April’s full Moon often corresponded with the early springtime blooms of a certain wildflower native to eastern North America: Phlox subulata—commonly called creeping phlox or moss phlox—which also went by the name “moss pink."

The more you know! The moon will appear full for about three days, from Monday morning to Thursday morning.

  • Monday, April 22nd (Earth Day): 71 for the high with partly sunny skies and breezy conditions
  • Tuesday, April 23rd (The peak day for the "pink" moon): 62 for the high, windy, and mostly sunny skies
  • Wednesday, April 24th: 65 for the high, mostly sunny, and mild
  • Thursday, April 25th: 67 for the high and rain throughout the day
  • Friday, April 26th: 64 for the high and cloudy conditions
