Go anywhere outside the Twin Cities Metro and there's a lot of wide open spaces in Minnesota. Greater Minnesota has some desolate spots, whether you're talking about the Boundary Waters in the north, or the seemingly endless farm fields in the south and west of the state.

That leads to the interesting query: Where is the most remote area in all of Minnesota? One website found an intriguing answer to that question and you might be surprised at what it discovered.

The Remote Footprints Project is on a mission to find the most desolate spot in each and every state. To determine this, they're looking at areas that are the farthest from any kind of road or trail. At the time of this post, they've gotten through 35 of the 50 states. How do they figure it out? According to the website, it's the farthest possible spot in a straight line from the nearest road or human settlement. And when it comes to Minnesota, that means heading north.

If you've spent any amount of time in the Boundary Waters Wilderness Area, you know just how isolated it is.

Accessible primarily by canoe, the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness in northeast Minnesota is one of America's most beautiful and remote places. Its vast wilderness extends 150 miles along the U.S.-Canada border, covering approximately 1,098,000 acres with over 1,100 lakes and 1,500 miles of canoe routes, attracting more than 150,000 visitors annually.
