The Green Bay Packers Will Make History During The Start Of The 2024 NFL Season
Coming off a playoff season last year, the Green Bay Packers will be kicking off the 2024 NFL season by making some history.
The league announced on Wednesday morning (April 10) that a couple of pieces to Green Bay's first game of the 2024 season that will be historic.
The first component is that the Packers game against the Eagles will be played on a Friday night. According to the league, this will be the first time in over 50 years the NFL will have a game on a Friday night of opening weekend.
The game will be on the evening of Friday, September 6, 2024.
With the expansion of games in recent years to include games on Black Friday, some Saturdays, and other nontraditional days and times for NFL games, this novelty isn't completely shocking for fans, but it is a first in quite a long time.
The bigger piece of NFL history being made during this Packers vs. Eagles game on September 6 is the location where they will be playing the game.
In an expansion of the NFL's International Games series, the league will be entering new territory. They've had games in Mexico, England, and Germany in recent years, but this latest expansion of their international games will see two NFL teams competing for the first time in South America.
The game will bring the Packers and Eagles to São Paulo, Brazil, where the two teams will play at the home of the SC Corinthians, Corinthians Arena.
Speaking about the game, Packers President/CEO Mark Murphy commented via press release on the game, saying:
“We're looking forward to being a part of this historic matchup against the Eagles in São Paulo. We're excited to play in front of our devoted fans in Brazil and help build upon the international popularity of the NFL and the Packers. We had a great experience playing internationally for the first time a couple of years ago and we're proud to be part of the league's continued global growth."
São Paulo's mayor says the Packers have a sizable following in the city, and he says the city is excited to welcome these two teams to their city.
If you're looking to watch the game, it will be made available nationwide on NBCUniversal's streaming service Peacock. If you live in a home market for either the Eagles or Packers, the game will also be broadcast on the local NBC affiliate, but watching the game elsewhere around the country will require a Peacock or NFL+ subscription.
