Iowa BBQ Sauce Legend Rolls into Sioux Falls
I bet there are many refrigerators with a bottle of Cookies Barbeque Sauce in their door right now. I'm certain that during July 4th Celebrations, many guests had a bottle of Cookies on their table. The President of Cookies, Speed Herrig, is currently in town. When I asked him how he got his name, I jokingly asked if he was a race car driver. However, he did do some racing during high school when he played as a running back. He mentioned that he had to be fast since he only weighed 110 pounds at the time.
As a longtime fan of Cookies, I was excited to hear that a guy named Speed was in Sioux Falls at HyVee on 49th and Louise. I initially thought it was a $16 dollar-an-hour intern I would be talking to, but it turned out to be the guy who sold his first batches of Cookies BBQ Sauce out of the back of his old Ford Pickup. Speed is a man with a multitude of stories and one-liners. He drives into town in an impressive motor home that pulls a trailer, and he has no problem negotiating corners from his experience growing up on a farm. He also travels around the Midwest promoting his products with a huge tractor-trailer rig.
Speed is an ambassador for the pork industry and has even cooked for the President of the United States. He's an excellent storyteller and promoter, although he did mention that he used to be afraid of speaking in front of people. If you're in the area of 49th and Louise, I highly recommend stopping by HyVee to grab some plates for your family tonight. While you're there, don't forget to grab a bottle of Cookies BBQ Sauce and some ribs as well – they are truly delicious!
