Glen Campbell’s Wife Recalls Singer’s Final Moments
Glen Campbell's wife Kim has shared a letter describing the singer's final moments, his battle with Alzheimer's and her own well-being after his Aug. 8 death.
At her Care Living website, Kim Campbell describes a sorrowful drive from Nashville to Arkansas, where she and her family are preparing to lay the country legend to rest. It's a joyless drive, she says, on board a tour bus that has brought them little but joy over the course of their 34-year marriage. An emotional third paragraph describes the heavy toll the last six years have taken on her.
"Although I knew it was inescapable and certain, nothing could have prepared me for the profound loss I felt as I said goodbye for the final time yesterday," she writes in a letter dated Aug. 9. The Tennessean reports that it was published to the website on Thursday (Aug. 18).
I had been praying that I would be able to hold his hand when he entered eternity, and my request was granted. While surrounded by family, I watched him take his last breath.
The final paragraph finds Kim Campbell reflecting on her husband's triumph over alcoholism and his acceptance of God in his life in 1981.

"I find immense comfort knowing that Glen’s spirit is now free and present with the Lord," she writes. "I have no doubt that when he met his maker yesterday at 10AM, he was greeted with, 'Well done, good and faithful servant.'"
Campbell died at the age of 81 on Aug. 8 after a six-year battle with Alzheimer's. The family chose to make public even the most painful details of his illness. The I'll Be Me documentary (2014) finds the singer on his final tour, simultaneously trying to entertain and remember key details in his life.
The "Gentle On My Mind" singer was laid to rest in his hometown of Delight, Ark. on Aug. 10.
