A very important blood drive that the Sioux Empire has come to depend on kicks off your Labor Day weekend.

The "All American" community blood drive is this Friday, (September 1) from 6 AM to 12 PM at the Avera McKennan Fitness Center at 3400 Southeastern Drive.

KSFY TV is reporting, for the third year in a row, the Avera McKennan Fitness Center, together with Dairy Queen on South Minnesota Avenue and the Sioux Falls Community Blood Bank are joining forces to host the blood drive.

Ken Versteeg, the Executive Director with the Community Blood Bank told KSFY TV, "Every year, the blood supply is compromised during Labor Day weekend, and this drive will provide a boost in supplies to treat trauma, surgery and cancer patients during that time."

Anyone interested in donating blood this Friday must be at least 17 years old, weigh a minimum of a 110 pounds or more, and be in good health. 16 year olds can also give blood, but, will need to present a signed consent form from a parent.

The blood bank recommends that all donors have something to eat, and have plenty of water to drink before donating blood.

Nice little incentives await everyone who donates. Each person who gives blood gets a free t-shirt, a three-day pass to the Avera McKennan Fitness Center, and a "pint for a pint" Dairy Queen gift certificate.

Plus all blood donors will be registered to win additional prizes the day of the event.
