The dry weather pattern is breaking records in South Dakota. Not only in April, but also for the entire year to start 2015.

We should get a reprieve with rain expected to arrive over the course of the next 48 hours. However, KDLT-TV’s Chief Meteorologist Brandon Spinner revealed some astounding statistics regarding the arid conditions.

“The State Climatologist Dennis Todey put out a list of this year’s climate. For 109 years of data this is the driest four-month period when it comes to the central part of the state," said Spinner. "That includes Kennebec, Pierre and Philip has seen the least amount of moisture so far across the entire state.”

Chamberlain and Mellette had historically dry conditions just for the month of April. Other areas were very close to breaking records like Big Stone City in northeastern South Dakota and Madison in the east central portion.

As of 5pm Tuesday Sioux Falls is nearly 4 inches behind normal accumulation of precipitation. Thunder will be a welcome sound in the near term, however Spinner says not to expect severe activity with the rain this week.
