Drive-In Church a Success in Yankton

There's drive-in movie theaters, drive-in restaurants, and even a drive-in Ferris Wheel, but a drive-in church?  Absolutely.

In the wake of the COVID-19 outbreak, many churches have moved from in-person services to online live streaming.  However, a church in Yankton is still able to maintain a form of in-person fellowship by offering drive-in church services.

Christ the King Lutheran Church in Yankton used to be home of the Yankton drive-in theater.  It didn't take long for Paster Dani Jo Bierwagen to bring back the drive-in concept and apply it to a church service.

This isn't the first time this has happened in Yankton.  According to Dakota News Now, another pastor held a drive-in worship service at this same location decades ago.

Church members find a spot in the parking lot and sit comfortably in their cars with their windows rolled up.  To hear the pastor preach, they tune into an FM radio frequency on their car radio.

Bierwagen told Dakota News Now that she is happy with the turnout.

”We want to congregate around the Word because the Word gives us hope and the virus is dangerous, but losing hope is dangerous too. So we need that encouragement from one another and from the Gospel,” said Bierwagen.

Pastor Bierwagen says she plans to hold drive-in services through the end of April and may continue to offer it for as long as it is needed.
