By Sanford Children's Hospital

When you hear you child has cancer, your world stops. That is exactly how Dan & Liz felt when they learned their two-year-old son, Charlie, had leukemia. But instead of questioning, why us?, their story is one of resilience and hope that inspired them to ask, why NOT us?

Charlie had a fever and was lethargic but Liz would be something as horrible as cancer. She wanted to know why and how, but there is no answer. Although Charlie doesn’t always like going to the Castle, knowing he’ll have to be poked and prodded, he really loves being there. He feels very safe and comfortable there. Charlie is now cancer-free and the family can again look to the future with hope. He has a good prognosis, but when going through the ordeal, he didn’t tell people he had leukemia, he said he just had a cough.
