Could Budweiser Lose Millions?
Anheuser-Busch is being accused of watering down its beer in Budweiser, Michelob and other brands and class action suits are seeking millions of dollars in damages.
Lawsuits have been filed in California, Pennsylvania and other states on behalf of consumers who have allegedly been cheated out of the beverage's stated alcoholic content. Budweiser and Michelob each claim to have over five percent alcohol, while the "light" brands are said to be over four percent.
Lead lawyer Josh Boxer of San Rafael, Calif., said Tuesday the suits are based on information from former employees at some of the company's 13 U.S. breweries. Boxer said water is added just before bottling, and cuts the stated alcohol content by 3 to 8 percent.
Anheuser-Busch says the claims are groundless and its beers fully comply with labeling laws.
