One man’s action 500 years ago in Germany will be brought back into focus by Protestant churches this weekend.

Martin Luther’s initial goal was to bring reforms to the Catholic church. Pastor Nabil Nour who serves Trinity Lutheran of rural Hartford says Luther took a great risk by standing up for what he believed.

“Luther really set the Reformation ablaze. He was not specifically attacking the church but the practices of the church (such as) selling indulgences in order to earn one’s salvation.”

According to Nour, Luther’s extensive study of the Bible led to a simple but mind-blowing conclusion.

“It’s going back to the truth of the Scripture. How is man justified before a Holy God? What do we have to do as mere human beings to earn God’s salvation? Ultimately it is a gift from God by grace alone, through faith alone on account of Christ alone.”

After Luther nailed 95 debate points to the door of the church at Wittenberg and the events that followed, Nour cites Time Magazine’s list that puts Luther as one of the most influential people of the last thousand years.

Trinity Lutheran will have a special service celebrating the 500th anniversary of the Reformation on Sunday (October 28) at 4:00 PM.

Another special service marking the Reformation will take place on Sunday in the Brandon Valley High School Performing Art Center at 5:00 PM.
