There were 20-plus country music stars at Loretta Lynn’s All-Star Birthday Celebration Concert in Nashville on Monday night (April 1), but Brandi Carlile stole the show.

Among the acts on the bill were legendary superstars including Garth Brooks, George Strait and Alan Jackson, as well as modern stars that included Miranda Lambert, Darius Rucker and Kacey Musgraves. However, in the midst of all the huge names on the bill, Carlile undoubtedly gave the best performance of the night.

The concert, which took place at Bridgestone Arena, was a tribute concert to country music icon Loretta Lynn to mark her 87th birthday. Lynn says before this, she has never had a birthday party. The 86-year-old, who celebrates her 87th birthday on April 14, admired the artists all night as they (mostly) sang reworkings of Lynn’s greatest hits. She also took the stage herself.

Carlile hit the stage for the first time early in the evening, giving an emotional performance of “She’s Got You” – a song originally recorded by Lynn's dear friend Patsy Cline in 1961. Lynn's remake became a No. 1 country hit in 1977.

With Carlile’s acute attention to dynamics and tone, as well as an impressive vocal display of power and control, she did the classic song more than enough justice. The rawness of her attitude and body language would make one think she wrote the song herself. Maybe it’s time for Carlile to cut a 2010s version?

Carlile remained onstage to play piano for Tanya Tucker immediately following her performance of “She’s Got You,” and made yet another appearance with her new supergroup the Highwomen, which also includes country artists Maren Morris and Amanda Shires.
