The second Friday in April is always National "Farm Animals Day," which brings me to the number one unwritten rule on the farm - you NEVER, EVER name your farm animals (except of course for dogs, cats and horses). Everything thing else is off limits!

Why you ask? Because when you name an animal, there's no way you'll ever be able to eat it! Go ahead, laugh, but it's true.

You ask anyone who grew up on a farm and they'll tell you the same thing. I learned the lesson the hard way when I named my first pig I raised for a 4-H project. When it came time to "move Sammy to the market," I was devastated.

How could I ever eat pork chops again? Or sausage? Or BACON??? It took my Dad sitting me down and explaining to me why we raised pigs in the first place - so they could be enjoyed on someone's dinner table. Still didn't make it any easier though.

Eventually, I moved past that "scarring moment." And I have to admit - bacon has even become one of my favorite foods! Still though, before taking that first bite of bacon I have to look at it and wonder if it's Sammy!
