Whitney Duncan finally felt the time was right to write and release a song for her late cousin, Holly Bobo. A music video for “Better Place” by Duncan’s band Post Monroe was released on Wednesday.

The somber, mid-tempo country song speaks directly to Bobo, a 20-year-old who went missing from her Tennessee home in April 2011. Her remains were found more than three years later, and now multiple people are awaiting trial for her murder. In a Facebook post Duncan says the song (co-written by cousin Jonathan Singleton and her Post Monroe bandmates Ashlee Hewitt and Shelby McLeod) is her chance to fill her cousin in on what she’s missed since she’s been gone.

Duncan says the passage of time has allowed her to finally talk and sing about her late cousin without being overcome by emotion. “Life has moved on in some ways,” she writes on Facebook, “yet it also feels like time stands still sometimes, but not a day goes by that I don’t think of her. With her murder trial approaching, I wanted to release this song to honor her. No matter what happened here on Earth, I know she’s in Heaven, and her heart isn’t broken, even if ours is.”

“I bet you don’t miss this town nobody leaves / And that lonesome red light blinks / Your old mustang, your room it’s the same / You probably don’t miss a thing / Because your heart don’t break / In your better place,” Duncan and Post Monroe sing at the chorus.

The murder trial was scheduled to begin earlier this month but was delayed by the discovery of what prosecutors say is the murder weapon.
