You'd think something like 'Free Ice Cream Day' sounds like all fun and games - but this annual celebration is actually the law!

The idea for designated time dedicated to the love of ice cream originated with Joint resolution 298, which was sponsored by Senator Walter Dee Huddleston of Kentucky on May 17, 1984.The resolution proclaimed the month of July 1984 as 'National Ice Cream Month' and July 15, 1984, as 'National Ice Cream Day'. It was signed into law by President Ronald Reagan on July 9, 1984 with Presidential Proclamation 5219.

This year's 'National Ice Cream Day' is Sunday, July 19, and if you're looking to be a law-abiding citizen and take part in this special day, your options of getting free ice cream are limited in Sioux Falls.

Cold Stone Creamery will be giving members of their My Cold Stone Club a free ice cream 'creation' with the purchase of one. The deal also applies to Cold Stone’s shakes, smoothies, and its new frappés.

With Dairy Queen things are a little trickier. Most DQ’s are independently owned and operated, and so your best best is to call ahead before you go. The same goes for local ice cream shops like B & G Milky Way.

Whether you are lucky enough to score some free ice cream or you have to pay for your treat, make sure you get out and enjoy 'National Ice Cream Day'.

Remember: It's the Law!
