What are the biggest concerns of the South Dakota fisherman? A recent survey, conducted by the South Dakota State University Co-op unit, aimed to find out. In bullet point fashion, here's what the survey revealed:

  • South Dakota anglers are most concerned with access to glacial lakes in the northeast
  • The cost of fishing licenses
  • Walleyes were the preferred fish for both residents and nonresidents.
  • Competition with non-resident anglers
  • Resident anglers spent just under 2.5 million days fishing in 2015
  • Resident anglers in 2015 spent just under 2.5 million days fishing.
  • About half the anglers on some of the bigger lakes such as Waubay, Bitter and Enemy Swim, are nonresidents
  • The packed boat ramp parking lots on the Missouri River

More than 31,000 of the more than 230,000 people who fished in the state last year responded to the survey.
