Wow. I've been watching for this day for a long time now. West River Deer season 'used to be a big deal to me' and of late, not so much. This year is different.

It was back in August that my son Logan said, 'hey, I think I'm going to get a deer license for Lyman County.'

I didn't think about it much at the time. We didn't have a place to really hunt. Oh, my brothers have land and farm out there but it's more bird hunting ground than deer.

Then I remember, that magical time of the year. The rut.

During the rut the bucks will push does out of the creeks and river areas out onto the wide open flat country. In short, it's an equalizer. If you have land to hunt, you could come across a buck chasing a doe.

It's a great time of year. My son Logan will graduate from college in May at Northern State University. I think it will be a great opportunity to catch up and maybe come across a deer.

If we don't get a deer, it doesn't matter.
