Wear The Color Blue Or The Puzzle Piece Today. Either Way, You Are Supporting World Autism Awareness Day

One of the first things I noticed when I logged on to Facebook today, was the many posts reminding people to wear something blue today.  Not to support a favorite sports team, but to support something that affects one in every 68 children in the United States. More specifically, 1 in every 42 boys.  Autism is the fastest-growing serious developmental disability in the United States, yet many people probably aren’t aware that April 2 is World Autism Awareness Day and the month of April is Autism Awareness Month.

Every year, autism organizations world-wide use April 2nd to bring awareness to the facts and details of this disability that has no cure and no medical detection.  Autism Speaks’s Light It Up Blue campaign has spread to all 7 continents this year with more than 100 countries adding blue lights to buildings and landmarks in honor of autism awareness. Blue lights will light up buildings from Delhi to Manhattan and thousands of landmarks are also expected to go blue today.  Even the International Space Station will be going blue and watching as the world lights up blue.

South Dakota’s Crazy Horse Memorial will be celebrating the unique talents and skills of individuals with autism with a special blue lighting ceremony that will take place on Wednesday, April 2.  Admission to the memorial will also be waived to those making a donation or bringing in three canned good items that will be donated to the Feeding South Dakota food bank.

Celebrate World Autism Awareness Day by wearing something blue (the color of Autism awareness) or the entire month of April by wearing a Blue Puzzle Piece pin.
