An extremely high level of a harmful chemical has forced officials to ban the use of drinking water in Lesterville.

The discovered solvent is called PCE which is a colorless organic liquid with a mild, chloroform-like odor.  Its greatest use is in the textile industry and as a component of dry-cleaning products.

At this time the source of the contamination is not known.  As a precaution, Lesterville residents should not drink nor come in contact with the water.  Even washing food is not recommended.  There will be bottled water shipped to the community north and west of Yankton plus arrangements for a shower facility is underway.
