Vikings Blast Four Home Runs In Sweep Over Minnesota-Crookston

SIOUX FALLS, SD — Augustana (19-8, 6-4 NSIC) swept Minnesota-Crookston (2-19, 1-9 NSIC) in a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference doubleheader on Saturday picking up a 6-1 win in game one before winning the nightcap 7-5. In game one, Augustana scored three runs in the top of the seventh inning to pull away for the win.

Minnesota-Crookston was the home team in today’s games as the doubleheader was moved to Sioux Falls due to poor field conditions in Crookston, Minn.

In the second game, Lindsay Spanton erased a one-run deficit with a two-run homer to center field to carry the Vikings to a 7-5 win. Spanton finished the day with three hits and three RBI.

Jenelle Trautmann had a big day at the plate for Augustana going 3-for-7 in the two games, hitting two home runs and driving in three runs. Trautmann started both games in the circle and improved to 17-5 on the season with the win in game one. She tossed 6.0 innings and struck out 12 batters while giving up just one walk and one run.

Trautmann started the second game and lasted 2.0 innings where she allowed four runs on three hits. Carley Pickett came into the game in relief of Trautmann and earned the win going 5.0 innings and giving up just two hits while striking out four.

Theresa McMahon went 3-for-7 at the plate in the doubleheader with a home run. Carly Peterson had two hits on the day, including a two-RBI single in game two.

GAME ONE
The Vikings got on the board early scoring a run on three hits in the top of the first inning. Jenny Brown got on base with a one out single and scoring later in the inning on a throwing error as the Vikings took a 1-0 lead.

McMahon made it a 2-0 game in the top of the second inning with a line drive home run over the left field wall for her fourth round-tripper of the season. Minnesota-Crookston made it a 2-1 game in the bottom of the third inning on an RBI double by Paige Schaust.

McMahon delivered an RBI single in the top of the sixth inning before the Vikings racked up three runs on four hits in the top of the seventh to go ahead 6-1.

In the seventh, Trautmann led off the inning with a towering home run to left field. With one out in the inning Erin Kempf and Chelsi Winskowski delivered back-to-back singles. On Winskowski’s single, Kempf scored after Winskowski got in a rundown between first and second base and there was an errant throw by the UMC catcher. Peterson then doubled down the left field line to score Winskowski making it a 6-1 game.

Pickett came in to pitch in the bottom of the seventh inning for the Vikings and shut the Golden Eagles down in order.

GAME TWO
The Vikings started the scoring early in game two as well picking up two runs in the top of the first inning on a towering home run by Trautmann. Spanton got on board with a two-out walk setting up Trautmann’s 13th home run of the season, which gave Augustana a 2-0 lead.

Minnesota Crookston answered back in the bottom of the first inning and took a 3-2 lead on a three-run home run by Sara Wiedmaier. Augustana turned a double play to escape the inning without further damage.

The Golden Eagles added a run in the bottom of the second inning to take a 4-2 before the Vikings cut the lead to one again (4-3) in the top of the third on an RBI single by Spanton.

Augustana plated the go-ahead run in the top of the fifth inning when Spanton hit a two-run homer over the center field fence giving the Vikings a 5-4 lead.

Augustana pushed its lead to 7-4 in the top of the sixth inning on Peterson’s two-RBI single through the left side of the infield. The Vikings looked to tack on a few more runs in the inning but UMC was able to end the threat on a double play after a hard line-out to the shortstop by Brown.

The Golden Eagles nearly came back in the bottom of the seventh inning scoring a run on two hits and one Augustana error by the Vikings held on for the 7-5 win.

Augustana returns home Sunday afternoon to host Bemidji State in a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m.
