Vikings Suffer First Shutout, Win Streak Snapped

ST. JOSEPH, MO — Missouri Western State‘s Morgan Rathmann hit a grand slam home run in the bottom of the sixth inning to add to the Griffons lead giving her team a 6-0 win over No. 5 Augustana College softball on Saturday afternoon.

MWSU, the tournament host, improved to 18-12 on the season while handing Augustana its second straight loss to set the Vikings at 15-4 on the season.

The Vikings were only able to muster up three hits through six innings before getting back-to-back two-out singles in the top of the seventh to finish the game with five hits. Carly Peterson led Augustana going 2 for 3 at the plate with two singles. Augustana was held without an extra-base hit for the second straight game, just the second time this season.

Jenelle Trautmann was the pitcher of record in the loss for the Vikings falling to 11-2 on the season giving up six runs on nine hits. MWSU’s Jackie Bishop improved to 12-5 on the season with the win striking out five batters and walking none.

Missouri Western grabbed a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning on a solo home run by Kat Steponovich.

The Griffons added to their lead in the fourth after a leadoff double came around to score on a fielder’s choice with one out in the inning to make the score 2-0.

Augustana got a hit in the third fourth and sixth innings, but was unable to get a runner past second base until the top of the seventh inning but by then it was too late as the Griffons went up 6-0 in the bottom of the sixth on the two-out grand slam home run by Rathmann.

In Saturday’s first game, No. 12 Emporia State (24-6) scored two runs in the top of the first and never looked back in a 7-1 win over No. 5 Augustana. The loss snapped a 10-game winning streak for the Vikings.

Emporia State had nine hits and left 12 runners on base but was able to keep Augustana off the board. The Vikings finished with five hits, led by Mackenzie Alstott with two singles, and left seven runners on base.

The Hornets jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning after Taylor Zordel led off the inning with double and came around to score on a fielder’s choice after moving up to third on a passed ball. ESU then scored on a two-out RBI single by Andrea Piezuch but would do no further damage leaving the bases loaded.

The Vikings put a threat together in the bottom half of the first inning with back-to-back singles by Alstott and Sarah Kennedy but Jenelle Trautmann bounced into a double play to end the inning.

A leadoff walk by Lindsay Spanton in the bottom of the second inning allowed Augustana to cut ESU’s lead in half at 2-1. Spanton walked to start the inning and two batters later Carly Peterson put runners on first and second after she walked. Spanton eventually came around to score when Jordan Schaffer reached on an error.

Emporia State went ahead 3-1 in the top of the fourth inning and the Vikings put together threats in the bottom half of the fourth and fifth innings but would not get any closer being held hitless in the final two innings.

The Hornets went up 4-1 in the sixth and pushed across three more in the seventh to hand Augustana its first loss in exactly one month.

The Vikings will close-out the Missouri Western State tournament with two more games Sunday. Augustana starts the day against Pittsburg State at 12 p.m. before taking on Washburn University at 2 p.m.
