How did you spend your Memorial Day? Did you hang out at the pool? Have a BBQ? Well, one veteran took a 13-mile hike in honor of a fallen comrade.

Sgt. Eric Hille, 33, of Riverside, California walked 13 miles in full gear weighing 70 lbs to the grave of fellow soldier Sgt. Eric Holke, who was killed by a roadside bomb in Iraq in 2007. Hille was there the day it happened.

As KCAL reports:

Holke and Hille were guarding a supply convoy in Iraq back in 2007 when an IED went off. Holke’s Humvee was caught up in the explosion.

“I got down into the turret and try to look at Sgt. Holke. I got back up and saw my Sgt. and just shook my head,” Hille recalled.

Holke left behind a wife and unborn child.

It was Holke’s family that inspired him to begin a new Memorial Day tradition – walking in honor of those who gave their lives to defend our country.

“We have to do our best to continue to remember the ones who paid the ultimate sacrifice for what we have the privilege of doing in this country,” Hille said.

Hille plans to do the hike every Memorial Day. And next year he won’t be alone – a group of 20 has agreed to march with him.

Hille’s story came to light when a picture of him kneeling beside Holke’s grave appearedin the Los Angeles Times. Check out the picture.
