USD Student Stands Up for Transgender Rights in South Dakota

Michaela Seiber has stood alongside transgender students fighting for their issues in South Dakota.

Seeing herself as part of a larger LBGT community, Michaela and her same-sex partner have travelled to the steps of capital in Pierre, to the peaceful protest outside a legislative coffee in her hometown of Sioux Falls.

As a USD public health student, Sieber has interacted with those in the transgender community, heard their stories and has seen the pain of what she sees as being treated less than human.

Sieber believes that there is a mistrust of transgender students based on fear.

Although laws regarding transgender students were not enacted by lawmakers in Pierre, several politicians have expressed disappointment of the transgender bathroom bill not passing the veto override in the house and have vowed to re-write the bill and submit it for the next legislative session.
