Traffic was tied up on Highway 81 near the Interstate 90 interchange south of Salem. A detour was in place for over six hours.

South Dakota Highway Patrol reported a truck with an oversized load broke down blocking both lanes of traffic before noon on Tuesday. Pictures from the SDHP Twitter feed indicated that the payload was part of the structure of a wind tower.

The truck appeared to be turning left to go south on Highway 81 after leaving I-90 going westbound. A crane was brought to the location in order to transfer the load to another truck.

Interstate 90 was not affected by the incident. However traffic going north on Highway 81 was re-routed to accommodate the blockage.
