Trophy Presentation Forthcoming at I-90 and North Cliff

Drivers endured a long stretch of tricky travel in on the north side of Sioux Falls, but apparently how it was done was award-worthy.  

The 2013 Interstate 90/Cliff Avenue reconstruction project in Sioux Falls won regional acclaim in the America’s Transportation Awards competition, sponsored by the American Association of State Highway Transportation Officials (AASHTO), AAA and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.

This project was one of the first in the nation to utilize innovative mobile temporary traffic signals to accommodate the various phasing of the project. This helped minimize the impact to the traveling public during construction and saved the contractor time and money by not having to move a semi-permanent signal system up to 10 times during the project.

The South Dakota Department of Transportation won the award in the Best Use of Innovation category for a small project.  The $17.4 million I-90/Cliff Avenue interchange project included reconstruction of 3,800 feet of Cliff Avenue and one mile of I-90, and the replacement of two bridges over Cliff Avenue. The interchange was converted from a typical diamond intersection to a single-point interchange which reduces conflict points and increases safety for the traveling public.
