Thieves made off with five guns taken from several cars over the weekend in Sioux Falls. In each incident, Sioux Falls Police Spokesman Sam Clemens says the vehicles were unlocked.

"The area was all down south. We're not sure if they are connected or not. But the one thing we had in common was people left handguns inside unlocked cars. Over the weekend, we had one car that had a couple of guns taken from it. We also had a separate car that also had two guns. The third car had keys inside along with a gun. Somebody took the whole car."

Clemens urges residents to lock their cars and don't leave valuables in them.

"If you have to leave valuables inside---make sure you have the car locked. Ideally you would want to take the valuables with you. If somebody sees that stuff---it's too tempting for someone to get in the vehicle and take what's left inside."

According to some law enforcement agencies a quarter of vehicle thefts are from unlocked cars.
