If you're not careful, those little numbers on the back of your credit card could end up costing you big money. Case in point - there's a new phone scam that has surfaced you need to be aware of.

How it works is a scammer calls you up pretending to be from your credit card company. They then proceed to tell you that there appears to be fraudulent activity on your account, but in order to proceed they need proof you're in possession of the card. That's when they ask for the three digit security number printed on the back of the card.

Credit investigators say once that happens, that's when the real damage begins to you and your account. Experts suggest you NEVER give out that security number over the phone when someone has called you. If you initiated the call, that's different. But if someone called you, be extremely careful.
