The Wrap: This Week in Review

File photo

A recap of this week’s top stories that had Kickin’ Country talkin’ and KIKN’s Collins and Co. keeping you informed:

Donald Moeller, 60, received a lethal injection at the South Dakota State Penitentiary in Sioux Falls on Tuesday night as punishment for the 1990 kidnap, rape and killing of young Becky O’Connell. When asked if he had any last words, Moeller replied, “No sir,” and then looked up and said, “they’re my fan club?” or possibly,  “hear my fan club?” referring to the cheers of other inmates nearby.

Superstorm Sandy, after killing at least 69 people in the Caribbean, streamed northward, merged with two wintry weather systems and socked the Northeast, mid-Atlantic and Great Lakes with wind, waves, rain and snow. Some figures associated with Sandy’s rampage through the U.S., as of Tuesday evening:

Width of storm: 1,000 miles

Property loss: $20 billion

Cancelled flights: over 18,000 and counting

Top wind speed: 140mph in New Hampshire

Snow: 29 inches in Maryland.

Irony: filming was shut down due to storm on Russel Crowe’s new movie, “Noah”.

Monday morning, Sioux Falls Taco John’s pledged 50% of proceeds from breakfast sales  to benefit SDHP Trooper Andrew Steen who was injured when a female ran him over with her car. First Bank and Trust matched $1000 in funds and Thrivent Financial West Minnehaha Chapter for Lutherans matched $2000 in funds. Thank you to Ted Miller and and Taco John’s crews!

Both South Dakota and North Dakota celebrated their 123rd birthdays Friday. President Benjamin Harrison signed the admission papers in 1889 allowing South Dakota to become the 40th sate in our great country, and North Dakota, the 39th.

Blake Shelton and his wife Miranda Lambert became the first couple ever to win a CMA award for Song of the Year. It was a spectacular night for Blake who also went on to win the Entertainer of the Year Award and Male Artist of the Year. Miranda won Female Artist of the Year. See all winners of the 46th Annual CMA’s.

This winter, snow plows in select neighborhoods in Sioux Falls neighborhoods will test  snow gates, which are designed to eliminate the pile of snow often left behind at the bottom of our driveways. (Ugh!) If you are one of those areas, you’ve won the ‘snow-gate lottery’…congratulations! Is your neighborhood in the zone?

A 19 year old has died as a result of a traffic accident on the on Highway 11 on the east side of Sioux Falls Friday night. A Honda Civic swerved into the oncoming lane near Target and the Century East Theaters and collided head on. The man was pronounced dead at the scene. Two people in a Bonneville were transported to an area hospital with non- life threatening injuries.
