Here’s a few of the stories that had Sioux Falls and surrounding areas talking this week.
It’s about time. South Dakota State Senators debated a bill on Tuesday afternoon to ban texting while driving in a statewide measure. While points were made on both sides of the issue the votes were finally cast. Results: The Senate passed the bill by a vote of 24-9. Now, it goes to a House committee. By the way, 39 other states, including neighbors Iowa and Nebraska, have a ban against texting while behind the wheel.
Sioux Falls lost a very special boy this week. JP Peters passed away on Saturday due to complications with influenza A. JP is the son of Jason and Deanna Peters. He was a 6th grader at St. Mary’s Catholic School.
If you misplaced your meth lab and need it back, the Sioux Falls Police Department would like to see you and make a deal. The remains of a meth lab were discovered at Family Park on Tea Ellis Road earlier in the week. If you have any information call CrimeStoppers at 367-7007.
“One last pull.” That’s what Gordon “Bud” Thompson said as he and his wife were ready to leave the Pine Ridge Prairie Wind casino on Valentine’s Day. That was a wise decision. It netted him and his wife $1 million in the Freedom Rings machine. The new millionaires, Gordon and Donna,have been married 60 years.
A satellite that will send back messages to EROS Data Center in Sioux Falls was launched Monday morning off California’s coast. It will track some of earth’s natural resources like glaciers, drought conditions, deforestation, and crop production. And there is not a Wall Drug bumper sticker on it because why?
Fire crews from Tea, Harrisburg, and Sioux Falls responded to a Friday morning call from the Tea Steakhouse. The damage was contained to a 4 foot hole in the roof due to smoking electrical wires. The owners were thankful to be on the scene at the time of the incident or it would have been much worse.
An approval by the South Dakota Legislature has paved the way for 1 cent bets in video lottery games. Currently, 5 cents is the minimum bet. The bill now goes to Governor Dennis Daugaard’s desk for his signature. Next to the “Leave a penny, take a penny” cup.
