Criminals will soon have another reason to watch their backs, because a new officer will soon be added to the South Dakota Highway Patrol. South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley has announced that the South Dakota Highway Patrol has been awarded $6,500 for a police service dog that will be used in drug investigations.

The funds were awarded out of the Drug Control Fund, and the new police service dog will be helping local law enforcement in drug control and apprehension purposes.

Attorney General Jackley says,

The Drug Control Fund allows law enforcement to combat controlled substance abuse by funding local programs with monies seized from drug arrests.  The funds will assist the SD Highway Patrol to better protect all South Dakota communities.

Superintendent of the SD Highway Patrol Colonel Craig Price is grateful for the funding assistance from the Attorney General's office and recognizes the importance of the addition of the police service dog. He says,

Our drug dogs have become an essential part in our efforts to stop drugs from coming in and traveling through the state of South Dakota.  We can use the highly-trained dogs not only on highways and interstates, but also in our communities.
