Driving the speed limit in South Dakota could be driving you in debt. New figures show how much more it costs to drive the 80 mile per hour speed limit on the Interstates.

A WalletHub study finds for every five miles you go over 60 miles per hour, it costs you - on average - 7% more in gas.

So, when you put pencil to paper, and take into account the 80 mile per hour speed limit in South Dakota, WalletHub spokesperson Jill Gonzales says,

"If you're going 80 miles per hour, that's 25% more gas that you're burning through, and that's gas you then have to go out and buy."

The WalletHub study also found that 75% of states have “absolute” speed limits, meaning just by going over the limit the state has enough to convict you of speeding.

In Illinois however - while no states have mandatory jail time - in Illinois if you're caught speeding you're automatically charged with reckless driving.

So the next time you decide to head out of town and "put pedal to the metal", remember, someone might be right around the corner with radar detector in hand.
