In theory, smart devices are aimed at making our lives easier and more convenient. Although, some days I beg to differ, but that's just me and a topic for another time.

But if you're a hunter, a trapper, or angler here in South Dakota, I have some good news, your life is about to get a whole lot more convenient thanks to your smartphone.

The South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks department is debuting an option that will now allow people to have their small game, fishing or trapping license scanned directly from their smartphone.

Wildlife officials say when you log into their account through the department's online licensing system, you will notice a bar code in the upper right hand corner of your license.

That bar code gives state conservation officers the ability to scan the license on smartphones.

If you're like me, and still a little bit old school, hard copies of your various licenses are still being accepted.

Keep in mind, the new system does not apply to federal waterfowl stamps, tags and licenses mailed from the department's licensing office.
