The Great Race, an automobile race like no other, will motor across the prairies of South Dakota this summer.

The race, which began in 1983, will begin on June 18th, 2016 in San Rafael, California, on the very street where the cruise scenes of American Graffiti were filmed, and will finish in Moline, Illinois. Hemmings Motor News Great Race is open to all 1972 and older collectible cars and trucks.

The racers will rally through the rock terrain and tall pines of the Black Hills on June 23, where the winning rally team for the day will be presented a trophy featuring Mount Rushmore. The next morning, Friday, June 24th, the competitors will race through the Badlands, and head toward Murdo, SD, home of the Pioneer Auto Museum. Then, speeding into the Central Time Zone, and a quick stop for lunch in Chamberlain, the teams will finally motor into Sioux Falls.

The race cars will park downtown on Phillips Ave. and the team with the best time for the day will be presented with a trophy symbolizing our many uses for corn.

Sioux Falls, which drew the largest crowds of the Great Race in 1994 and 1996, will be an overnight stay for the teams.

The race ends on June 26th in Moline, Illinois.

There will be over 400 vehicles, support crews, and teams competing for the grand prize - a check for $50,000 and a large eagle trophy.
