Has your Facebook feed been taken over by warnings about the dangers of "The Game of 72?" In case you've been hiding your mom's posts and haven't heard about this, the Game of 72 is supposedly a contest where teens use social media to challenge each other to run away from home for 72 hours just to see if they can.

Here's the thing, it's not real.

The BBC reports that social media has played an old fashion game of telephone with the story of a 13-year old French girl. In April, Emma disappeared from her home in northern France. When she turned up she told police that she was playing a game where she was challenged to run away from home for 72 hours to see what would happen.

Local media picked up the girl's story, it went national, then international, then it took off on social media scaring our aunts like an episode of SVU.

But, the officials in the French district where this took place report that it all was an excuse to cover up that the girl had run off with someone. Reports of a recent disappearance of two young people in England being linked to the game has been similarly debunked by the local police.

In fact, informal searches made by the BBC on various social media platforms show that most mentions of the Game of 72 have been linked to media reports, and media reports about media reports.
