SIOUX FALLS – Parents who think their children have too much time on their hands can put their kids to work volunteering.

Some teens aren’t old enough to work a paying job but according to Sara Carothers, Volunteer Services Director at the Helpline Center, there are volunteer jobs for all age children.

“We work with youth of all ages to get out and volunteer. It’s about finding that perfect fit. Finding something they’re interested in so they will enjoy it.”

Carothers says there is no shortage of volunteer jobs, “We need people all the time youth and adults.”

For example, some of the places teens can help out include the Washington Pavilion, the Outdoor Campus and Children’s Care Hospital and School.  The best way to find a volunteer job that you’re interested in is by calling 211 or looking up the Helpline Center.

Not only does volunteering keep your teens busy, it’s also providing the organization a service. Carothers said according to IndependentSector.org each hour of volunteer work in South Dakota is equal to $15.99.

Carothers said parents want their kids to experience volunteering. “They want them to do something purposeful as well as give back and do something constructive.”
