A Friday afternoon turned tragic as a teenage male was reported drowned near Garretson. Very few details are currently known.

Sgt. Mason Braun of the Minnehaha County Sheriff’s Office issued a press release saying they received the report of a witnessed drowning at 5:03 PM Friday. The body was recovered at 6:40 PM.

According to reports from KSFY who spoke to Cpt. Mike Walsh, the teenager was in shallow water when he stepped off a mill dam along Splitrock Creek.

The name has not been released and the incident is still under investigation by the Sheriff’s Office. Eight different agencies were present to handle the situation including units from Garretson, Brandon, Minnehaha County, South Dakota Game Fish and Parks plus the South Dakota Highway Patrol.

The park was temporarily closed during the search but has since reopened.
