Taylor Swift let her political leanings be known, and Twitter responded like it always does, with equal amounts of anger, shock, humor and the bizarre.

The one-time country singer said she'll vote for Democratic U.S. Senate nominee Phil Bredesen in November, citing what she says is competitor Marsha Blackburn's poor track record on issues of equality. For more than a decade Swift has intentionally refrained from politics or from explicitly expressing how she feels on social issues, aside from the many songs she's released that promote equality among all people.

Political pundits, politicians, actors, fans, ex-fans and good old-fashioned Twitter trolls either clapped back or celebrated Swift's Sunday night message, delivered via Instagram.

Some of the tweets in response weren't safe for work (or were just downright hateful), but one thread brought the moment back to the singer's infamous moment with Kanye West at the MTV Video Music Awards (West is a supporter of Republican Donald Trump). Others questioned the timing of Swift's endorsement, which comes days after Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh's sexual assault hearing was finished, and days after the American leg of her Reputation Tour wrapped.

Enjoy a sampling of the best or worst from Twitter above. Her original post has more than 1.5 million likes, but zero comments, as Swift disabled them. She rarely tweets these days, although she does 83.6 million followers there, compared to her 112 million on Instagram.
