A recent study shows that South Dakota is one of the most lenient states when it comes to speeding and reckless driving. All 50 states and the District of Columbia were included in the rundown.

The study conducted by Wallet Hub uses a variety of factors to come to their conclusion. Data points included potential fines, jail time, the average rise of insurance rates and how each state administers the law.

South Dakota settles into a tie for number 47 with three other states with only Texas below that grouping. Colorado is considered the number one state where taking risks behind the wheel hurts the most.

Let’s compare the two states in the lead foot categories. There is no set speed in the Rushmore State where excessive speeding is automatically considered reckless driving while Colorado puts the mark at over 25 m.p.h. beyond the limit.

A speeding ticket in South Dakota will cost you slightly more in car insurance than Colorado (21-18 percent), however you’ll get your license suspended faster getting busted for speeding in Colorado. It takes over double the amount of speeding tickets to be eligible for suspension in South Dakota.

When it comes to reckless driving, Colorado will put you in jail for ten days if you’re busted. South Dakota at least for the first two infractions there is no jail time. The fine structure is different as well. South Dakota minimum fine for reckless driving is $500. In Colorado, the first offense is a $300 fine while the second time you get caught escalates the penalty to $1000.

Posted speed limits are not part of the equation in this survey. In case you were wondering, 75 is the maximum speed on rural interstates in the Rocky Mountain State. Both states have a maximum of 65 on rural highways.
