Strong Set of Semifinals Highlights Day Two of Class A, B Girls State Basketball

Yesterday featured two six seeds advancing and an overtime thriller to set up today's semifinal rounds in the Class A and Class B Girls State Basketball Tournaments.

Class A:
As most expected, St. Thomas More advanced to the semifinals after a dominating second half over Dell Rapids. St. Thomas More allowed just nine points scored in the final two quarters leading to a 55-24 win. Dell Rapids never held the lead.

Hamlin used a 14-16 advantage in the 3rd quarter to propel them to a 53-43 win over Elk Point-Jefferson. Hamlin was led by Lexi Wadsworth's 15 points.

An overtime thriller took place between McLaughlin and Webster in the first game of the night session. The two teams exchanged the lead five times throughout the game, but it was a three point difference in overtime to advance the second seeded Webster Area Bearcats to the semifinals. Webster with the 66-63 win.

In the nightcap, a sixth seed advanced to the semifinals as Winner pulled a 54-41 win over West Central. Four players finished in double figures to advance Winner.

Consolation Games:
12:00 - Dell Rapids vs. Elk Point-Jefferson
1:30 - McLaughlin vs. West Central

Championship Semifinals:
6:00 - St. Thomas More vs. Hamlin
7:30 - Webster Area vs. Winner

Class B:
Top seed Sully Buttes had no issues with Leola/Frederick in the first game of the Class B tournament. Sully Buttes shutout Leola/Frederick in the 2nd quarter (6-0) on the way to a 56-27 win.

Avon and Faith went back and forth through the first half with the score being even twice and the lead changing five times. Avon, however, scored 34 points in the second half to pull out the win 46-38.

Ethan started the night session off with a 17 point win over Irene-Wakonda. Karly Gustafson led the way for Ethan scoring 18 points and securing six rebounds. Ethan win the win 51-34.

Much like the "A" tournament, the sixth seed advanced in the "B" side as Sanborn Central/Woonsocket punched their ticket to the semifinals with a 55-41 win over Wall. Myah Selland led the way for Sanborn Central/Woonsocket with 24 points.
