The legendary Tammy Wynette is associated more with the song "Stand By Your Man" , than any other. It was so closely linked with Tammy that it was used as the title for her 1979 biography.

The song spent three weeks at number one in 1968. It also was a Grammy winner in 1970.

The idea for the song belonged to producer Billy Sherrill, who carried the title in his pocket on a piece of paper for more than a year.

He finally put it to good use on the day of August 26, 1968 during a recording session with Tammy at the famed Columbia Studio B. They sat down to write a song and he gave it to Tammy.

She immediately had an affinity with the concept. After a couple of lines it just came to her. Tammy later told that it was the fastest song she ever wrote. It was if it was meant to be.
